James was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, and immigrated to Lonaconing, MD, in the early 1850's. He married Elizabeth Thompson on April 2, 1856, and together they had 8 children--3 of which were born in California in the 1860's during a search for gold. The others were all born in Lonaconing. They returned to Maryland before 1870, and sometime after 1885, James and Elizabeth, along with their unmarried children, migrated to the Mon Valley area of Pennsylvania. Eventually, all of their children relocated there as well.
