Josie was the daughter of William Alexander and Cleopatra Roberts Leonard. She married James F. Catron April 9, 1909, together they had 14 children, of the 14 children there were 2 sets of twins, one Roy Hubble Catron died at about 6 months old. Josie died in the Lee Memorial Hospital in Marion, VA of a cerebral hemmorage at the age of 75 years and 10 months. Her husband James Franklin was born in 1887 and died in 1941 of a heart attack. They lived on a farm in Rural Retreat, VA and raised their family...Her oldest son Frank was killed in Pennsylvania at the age of 22. My mother Eleanor Catron Goodman was her daugher. I have fond memories of my Grandmother, we called her "Granny", she always remembered each grandchilds birthday. In her later years she spent her winters in Orlando, Fl. with her daughter Mildred Catron Bunting and Nancy Ellen Page Schmidt. She than traveled to the Panama Canal Zone and spent several winter months with her son and his family James Otis & Althea Catron, he was a prison guard for the US government and she a RN at the local hospital. They raised 3 children while living in the Canal Zone. Otis retired in 1966.

Josie outlived 4 of her children. As of 2012 only two survive and they are 90 and 88 years old. My mother Eleanor died at the age of 91 July 27, 2011.

Josie's father William Alexander Leonard was a Postmaster at Groseclose, VA an ordained Methodist minister and a sunday school teacher. Both her Mother and Father lived to be 89 years old. Her siblings were Paul, Dwight, and Nellie. Nellie never married, she lived to be around 92 years old. Paul died around the age of 69 and lived most of his life in Roanoke, VA, Dwight lived in Arlington, VA and his wife name was Mae, they never were blessed with children.

My Granny could make some of the most delicious home made bread and especially home made "salt rising" bread..we made "milk toast" out of it...my mother would make it and it was never quit the same...was good but not the same...my granny taught my mother how to cook and both were good country cooks...I think having an old wood stove helped the bread to rise much better...they made the yeast from potatoes and corn meal...The Catron and Leonard were hard working farm people and each I am sure sweat water and blood. They lived off the land and God was good to them, even though life had many deaths, disappointments, births and marriages. She is truly missed.
