Born Andreas Gärber in Balinka, Fejer County, Hungary during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The Gärber family spoke German, having come from Styria, Austria to Hungary in 1749. He migrated with his parents to Satnica, Croatia in 1890. Multi-lingual, his first name has been spelled many ways in the records - Andreas, Andro, Andrea, Andriya, Andras, Andrew. He came to the USA for the first time when he was 17 years old so he could earn money and return to Croatia to buy land for a small farm. He married Anna Hörl in 1910. He served in the Imperial Royal Austro-Hungarian Army in WWI and was a POW in Italy. He came to the USA for the last time in 1921 and sent for his family in 1923. He worked as a machinist at Cutler-Hammer in NYC for many years before he and his wife moved to Frewsburg to live with his daughter, Ann Percy.
