A GOOD CITIZEN CALLED
August Hansen was born on the 6th day of October, 1838, in Wobbenbull, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In April, 1865 he was joined in the bonds of holy wedlock with Marie Petersen. This union was blessed with five children; three
girls and two boys. Hoping to make a better and a more comfortable home for his family, he bid farewell to the land of his birth in 1870. He came to the shores
of America on the last day of March, 1879, and made his home in this vicinity, where he lived all the succeeding days of his life.
Here he was well known and here he gathered about him a host of friends. On September 9th, 1911, he was bereaved of his wife. He felt this loss keenly, and mourned deeply over her departure. Since then he has made his home with his children where all his wants and necessities were well supplied. They offered him a good home that he might spend the days of the evening of live in comfort and quietude. He departed this life on May 11, 1921, after having attained the age of eighty three years, seven months, and five days. He leaves to mourn his departure his five children: B.J. Hansen, with whom he spent most of his time, and where he passed to the other world: Peter Hansen of Dolan, S Dakota; Mrs. L.C. Petersen, Mrs. Henry Ahrendsen and Mrs. C. Petersen all of this vicinity.
Also nineteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the B.J. Hansen home Saturday forenoon at 10:00 o’clock, conducted by Rev. G.E. Melcoert, pastor of the Lutheran church. Music was furnished by a part of the Lutheran choir. Interment in Mayflower cemetery near Oxford Junction.
