Johannes Diehl was born on September 6, 1829 to Johann Martin and Julianna Diehl, in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. Johannes was one of 5 children born to his 'Martin' and Julianna. He was also a twin to Anna Margareta Diehl. Anna died when she was only 3 years old.
Johannes and his family left Germany and moved to the United States. Johannes Diehl changed his name to be spelled John Deal and every generation after has carried the new spelling of 'Deal'. John married Anna Barbara Fultz February 22, 1853 and together they had 4 children; Julia, John, Martin and Henry W. They lived in Hayes township, Buena Vista County, Iowa.

John Deal., Sr., of Hayes, was thrown backward off from his horse one day last week while herding cattle, striking on his head and shoulders, from which he is suffering a partial paralysis.

JOHN DEAL ~ OLD RESIDENT AND PROMINENT CITIZEN OF HAYES, LAYS IN HELPLESS CONDITION
John Deal, an old resident and prominent citizen of Hayes township, while herding cattle last week was thrown from his horse and striking the ground with the back of his neck injured his spinal cord, from the result of which entire paralysis was produced below the injury. He lays in a helpless condition and there is no hope of recovery. The family have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood.

John Deal Sr., whom we mentioned last week as having received a severe accident, died last week Saturday, the funeral occurring on Sunday. Mr. Deal was one of the earliest settlers of our county and was a man highly esteemed by all who met him.
