James Plesant Cardwell, son of Plesant P. and Sarah Cardwell, was born near Jefferson, Ia., October 4, 1854 and passed away at Belleville, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.M. Wells, February 20, 1941 at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 16 days.

He was united in marriage to Minnie Alice Barrett, November 19, 1882, and to this union eight children were born, one dying in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Stella Kaplo, passed away in November, 1934. His wife prededed him in death December 29, 1930.

He came to Kansas with his parents locating on a farm near Republic. After his marriage, he was engaged in farming, moving his family to Belleville in 1904 where they resided until the death of his wife ten years ago. The past nine years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.M. Wells.

He is survived by four daughters and two sons, Mrs. I.N. Crawford of Junction City, Mrs. A. J. Dickerman of Denver, Colo., Mrs. J.M. Wells and Mrs. Fay Snyder of Belleville, Roy P. Cardwell of Denver, and Leslie J. Cardwell of Fort Morgan, Colo. Also three brothers and two sisters, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

He was a kind husband and loving father, always taking great interest in his family, home and community. He led an active life until 18 months ago, but since then he had been confined to his home. He was a patient sufferer, and everything was done for his comfort that loving hands could do. The funeral services were held in the Bachelor-Faulkner funeral parlors on Monday afternoon February 24, conducted by the Rev. P.O. Davis, pastor of the Christian church in Belleville, Interment was made in the Prairie Rose cemetery south of Republic.
