His lineage was from a circuit riding methodist preacher background. He helped organize 23 Free Will Baptist Churches in in the 1940's in Wise County and portions of Kentucky. He and his brother Wade Powers were used in numerous revivals in surrounding counties. They would stay with people in the community for two to three weeks at a time, from house to house and then preach revivals during the evening hours. They would receive poundings of food items as honoriums.
