PITTSFIELD -- The Rev. Ettore D. Canzano, C.S.S., 77, of Waltham, formerly of Pittsfield, died Saturday at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.

Born Oct. 15, 1921 in Turrivalignani, Italy, son of Achille and Italia Santilli Canzano, he emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1929. After attending Pittsfield schools, he entered the Stigmatine Minor Seminary in Waltham in 1934.

Father Canzano made his first profession as a Stigmatine religious in 1939. He studied philosophy and theology at the Stigmatine Major Seminary in Wellesley, and was ordained to the priesthood in the chapel on June 12, 1947, by the Most Rev. Louis J. Collignon, O.M.I., bishop of Les Cayes, Haiti.

Although Father Canzano was sometimes hampered by fragile health, he was an assistant pastor in several parishes including Mount Carmel Church in White Plains, N.Y.; in Massachusetts at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Feeding Hills, Holy Family and St. Francis in Lynn, Sacred Heart of Jesus in Waltham and Mount Carmel in Pittsfield. He was also a pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Beside his parish ministry, Father Canzano served as chaplain at the Veterans' Administration and Beth Israel hospitals, both in Boston, and at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, N.H. He was an advocate in the marriage tribunal of the Diocese of Springfield.

Father Canzano had been in semiretirement at St. Joseph's Hall in Waltham since 1994.

He leaves a sister, Doris Cowhey of Lenox; and a brother, Richard Canzano of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The Rev. Ettore D. Canzano, 77, of Waltham, Mass., died Saturday, July 31, 1999. He was the brother of Doris Cowhey of Lenox and Richard Canzano of Pittsfield; and brother-in-law of Thomas C. Cowhey of Lenox. Survived also by a nephew, Michael Cowhey, and his wife Dawne; a niece, Lori Simon, and her husband, Thomas; and a grandnephew, Jonathan Simon, all of Pittsfield. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at All Souls' Church, 51 Pembroke Ave., Pittsfield, on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at 10:30. Burial will be Wednesday at 4:30 at the Stigmatine lot in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Route 109, Milford, Mass. Father Canzano will lie in State at All Souls' Church on Tuesday, Aug. 3 beginning at 4, concluding with a prayer service at 7. Mount Carmel Church Ladies' Guild and Holy Name Society and All Souls' Church Ladies' Society will meet for the prayer service. Father Canzano was predeceased by a sister, Eva Pignone.
