Mary Jane Applebee was born February 6, 1864 at Lake Pleasant, Erie County, Pennsylvania to Julius Merriot Applebee and Jane Drake. Mary Jane married Abe Carter Sherman March 25, 1885, they lived in West Greene and had seven children: Frances, Cora, Dottie, Neil Carter, Mary Laura, Florence and Theodore. About 1918, Mary Jane and Abe moved to Wesleyville. On Friday January 25, 1929, Mary Jane went to visit her daughter, Frances, who lived at 3815 South Street in Wesleyville. While helping to clean the house, her dress came in contact with the stove and caught on fire. She passed away on the 26th at the Hamot Hospital in Erie from the burns she had sustained. Sixty four year old Mary Jane was buried in the Waterford Cemetery, Waterford, Pennsylvania following funeral services at her home. She was preceded in death by four of her children, Cora Sherman, Dottie Sherman, Mrs. Fred (Mary Laura) Galbreath and Theodore Sherman; and one sister Flora Applebee. She was survived by her husband of 43 years Abe Carter Sherman; son Neil Carter Sherman of West Greene; two daughters Mrs. Guy (Frances) Travis of Wesleyville and Mrs. Robert (Florence) Caldwell of Erie; Three brothers Wellington Merriot Applebee of Erie, Jay Burr Applebee of Arbuckle and Frank Drake Applebee of Lake Pleasant; sister Mrs. Williway (Emma) Titus of Arbuckle; and many grand-children.
