Charles was in the Army during World War II, drafted after working several years at the Willow Run B24 Bomber plant. It was when he was in Basic Trainig outside of Washington DC that he met his future wife, Flora.

The original headstone for Charles had an incorrect Death Date: which also happened to be his grandson David Jr's birthday 'May 23' instead of 'Mar 23'
