Husband of Cattarina Guarnieri Gardella-Cattarina born in Neirone, Genova, Liguria, Italy to Carlo and Maria Antonia Rosasco Guarnieri January 10, 1859 in Neirone, Italy.-They came to New York when their son Stephano was around a year old in April of 1861.

Cattarina (Catherine) died in New York when their son Stephano (Stephen) was 2 1/2 years old. (Abt. 1864) Have been unable to find any proof of Cattarinas death and burial in New York or of Stephens birth in New York. Per family history from my Grandmother, Amy Katherine Gardella Wyman, Andrea and Caterina came to New York from Genoa Italy in 1858/59 time frame and Stephan was born in New York. After Cattarinas death Andrea sent Stephan back to Italy with relatives and Andrew (Andrea) came to Oroville.

After having research done by Record Click we found a great surprise. Stephano, Andreas and Catterinas son was actually born in Italy! They found his birth certificate. And when Andrea died his death and family information was sent to the Italian Consulate in San Francisco who in turn sent it to Neirone, Italy where it was found by the research group.

Husband of Angelina Gardella Capurro
Father of:
Stephano (Stephen) Gardella 1861-1930-Peoria Cemetery
Joseph Gardella 1871-1956-Oroville Cemetery-Capurro Plot
Peter Gardella 1873-1910-Oroville Cemetery-Capurro Plot

Andrew owned 47.5 Acres of land that he and 2 of Angelinas brothers, purchased from an Andrea Gardella (whom I believed to be Andrews father until recently finding information from Italian records. He may be a brother to Vittoria Gardella)...for $4000 in gold pieces called the Italian Gardens in downtown Oroville in 1870's. It was also referred to as "Gardella & Co.". and Gardella Bros. In its own right a very successful truck garden company. I have the probate from the death of Andrew and it appears they were a large company and very busy. To this date no photos of the business have been found even though it was a vast area of downtown Oroville.

Andrew (Andrea), in three short years had come to Ophir, remarried, become the owner of a successful business with his brothers in law, applied for and received his citizenship papers, sent for his son Stephen to come to Oroville from Italy to join his new family. Sadly before Stephen arrived in Butte County his father, Andrew, had been injured and Stephen was sent to Bangor, CA to live with relatives or friends of Angelinas by the name of Benniger (sp). She was pregnant, had a toddler and was dealing with her husbands injury I would guess. Per Grandmothers notes she states that Stephen stayed with the Beningers..and in another written history she said he stayed with Angelinas brother Pete Gardella. BUT I have been unable to confirm that Angelina had a brother named Pete. Stephano was not welcomed by Angelina and was left out of the probate until someone brought it to her attention.

From what I can make out in the probate, Andrew had an arm injury that eventually led to his early death leaving Angelina with his son Stephen and a son named Joseph and an unborn child (Peter).

The Probate went on for several years. It started in February of 1873 when Angelina applied to be and was approved to be administrator and declared the value of his estate to be approximately $350.00. Simon Le Francke, Louis Romano and John Welsh were appointed as appraisers of the estate. Then comes Mr. D. S. Marchella requesting to be appointed administrator of Andrews estate, July 28, 1876 because Angelina had remarried Giovanni Capurro on June 2, 1875. September 18, 1876 Angelina files a probate claim with the court that the whole estate being less than $1500 be set apart to herself and family of the deceased. Then on November 9, 1876 Giovanni Capurro requests guardianship of Joseph, Peter and Stephano who is about 19 and no blood relation to any of them except Andrew who passed away. The judge decides he wants to hear in court from Joseph Gardella, Angelinas brother, about his concerns for Giovanni receiving guardianship of the children. On the 15th day of November, 1876 they give their permission for Giovanni to become legal guardian of all three children. They had Stephano (Stephen) sign a paper agreeing to the appointment. Then on January 22, 1877 the court orders that the property to be inherited by the minors be sold. The report of the sales of the properties was filed with the court on March 1, 1877. D. A. Marchella purchased a lot and some personal property for $935.00 Gold Coin.

In 1902 more property was found belonging to Andrew Gardella (and I think it was perhaps property the first Andrew Gardella owned). Never the less it was assumed it belonged to this Andrew Gardella, describled as "Lot 5 of the Gardella Tract" and quit claimed to Luther Holton, E. W. Fogg and Ada M. Goodwin by P. F. Bullington even though Joseph and Peter were in Oroville and Stephan was in Yuba County. The courts never bothered to find the family that was plainly in Oroville and just gave their property to the three people above.
