Arthur is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Gabaldón Castillo of Albuquerque, children, Rebecca Sandoval and her husband, George of Albuquerque, Arthur "Larry" Castillo and his wife, Sue of Los Lunas and Mary Therese Márquez and her husband, David of Georgia, daughter-in-law, Debbie Rugg, grandchildren, Nichole Howard, Paul Márquez and his wife, LaDonna, Christa Adams and her former husband John, Geoffrey Sandoval and his wife, Kathleen and Christopher Castillo and his wife, Melissa, great-grandchildren, Tyler, Connor, Andres, Colin and Lorenzo, brother-in-law, Atalio Chávez and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arthur was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Castillo, granddaughter, Jennifer Sandoval, one brother and three sisters.
Arthur was born on July 15, 1918 in Belen, NM, where he attended St. Mary's Grade School and Belen High School, where he lettered four years in basketball.
After high school during World War II, he entered the United States Army, serving in the 45th Infantry Division. Arthur was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon returning from military duty, he worked for the Santa Fé Railroad.
Arthur was a graduate of Saint Joseph's College in Albuquerque. After 32 years, Arthur retired from Sandia National Labs. During his retirement years, he took up golf and nurtured his love for woodworking and bowling. Mr. Castillo was a member of the DAV, VFW, Senior Golf Association, Elks and the Holy Name Society. Arthur was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he participated in the ministry of hospitality (usher).
A memorial rosary will be recited on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at French - University Chapel. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper NW. Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Mary's Capital Campaign, 619 Copper Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
