Following graduation, he worked as a geologist in the oil fields of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. He then moved back to Utah and worked several years at the Thiokol Chemical Company in Brigham City. Richard later moved to Idaho and worked in the research department for the Amalgamated Sugar Company in Twin Falls, and later as an assistant chemist and then as the chief chemist at the Paul plant.
He married Laura Lee Holyoak on Dec. 22, 1967. He was an active member of the LDS Church and after his retirement, Richard and Laura served a church mission at the Los Angeles LDS Temple Visitor Center. He enjoyed reading, gardening, hunting, fishing and spoiling the grandchildren. He loved the Lord, his family and his country.
