Double Tragedy at Scunthorpe - WINTERTON MAN’S BRAVERY
A distressing double fatality occurred on Monday evening at the Redbourne Hill Extensions. It appears that the body of a ganger named Jones was seen at the bottom of a trial hole, and Mr. Richard Lawson, of Winterton, the assistant blast furnace manager, with gas helmet and rescue appliance, descended and attempted a rescue. It is thought, however, that the helmet, rope and lifebelt could not have been properly fixed, for it is supposed that he, too, was overcome by gas and when they were finally rescued both were dead. The death of Mr. Lawson created a profound shock to his many friends in this district, and much sympathy is felt for his young wife and two children.
