Sam was born in Slocum Township to William Henry Eckroth and Alice Elmira Fink. He was baptized on February 9, 1913 at the Berwick Christian Church. On April 29, 1914, he married Ethel Mae Klingerman and the couple had five children: Willard Henry, Helen Maxine, Phyllis Jean, Mary Alice, and Keith Edwin.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Sam operated Eckroth's Taxi service in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He worked in the machine shop of American Car and Foundry Industries in Berwick for twenty years. After his retirement, he delivered the Berwick Enterprise newspaper in the Briggsville and Hetlerville areas until he was well past 80.
