In 1794 Abel took his growing family to the western wilderness in Herkimer county and settled in the town of Warren. He joined the Baptist Church in his new home and was a devout follower until his death.
In 1837 Abel, his wife Alsa and the family of his son Amasa, moved a few miles away to a farm in the area known as Metcalf Hill in Otsego county. Abel was elderly and in poor health and died July 15, 1838. He was buried in the public burying grounds that were located on their farm.
