DARLINGTON - The Rev John Stoll Meggs, 82, of Dovesville, died early Wednesday in a local clinic after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Black Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev Charles F. Hinson, the Rev Larry Morris and the Rev Percy H. Hughes. Burial will follow in Black Creek Cemetery, directed by Belk King Funeral Home.
The Rev Mr Meggs was born in Marlboro County, September 27, 1881, the son of the late John Levi and Nancy Hayes Meggs. He spent the early part of his life in Marion where he was associated with the US Post Office as clerk and later as postmaster for 25 years. He also worked in Washington, D.C., for several years with the civil service.
At the time of his death he was a retired Baptist minister and was engaged in farming.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Gandy Meggs; one daughter, Mrs. Colin K. Jordan of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Samuel J. Meggs of Dovesville.
Also surviving by a former marriage to Monica Hayes Meggs of Lake View, who died in 1917, are three daughters, Mrs. K. O. Bullard and Mrs. Robert B. Rogers of Marion, and Mrs. L. S. Wolfe of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, J. S. Meggs Jr. of Key West, Fla. and C. Paul Meggs of Mullins.
Also surviving are two brothers, W. L. Meggs of Eustis, Fla. and Frank M. Meggs of Jacksonville, Fla.; and three sisters, Mrs. A. R. Nicholson of Mullins, Mrs. Clara Allen of Marion and Miss Jennie Meggs of Atlanta.
