David was a Methodist minister who also repaired clocks and jewelry. He and his family moved to San Saba County in the late 1870's to join his son, James, who had already settled in the area.
David's tombstone was stolen/removed from the Hillcrest Cemetery in the early 2000's, but I am attaching a photo of what it looked like before it's removal.
If you are interested in seeing his obituary, contact me with an email to send you a scan of my microfiche copy, but here is the text of the May 6, 1898, page 4 entry:
Tuesday morning at 6:30 o'clock Rev. D. H. Smith died at the home of his son, Henry Smith, in the western part of San Saba. Mr. Smith was 78 years old. He was reared in Perry County, Ala. He came to Texas in 1873, and in 1875 came to this county where he has made his home ever since. He had been a clock tinker and bible agent in this section of country for several years. He had been a preacher in the Methodist Church South for nearly sixty years. While he was only a few years in the Conference work he was always an active servant in the Master's work, preaching almost every Sunday. He was buried at the county cemetery, on mile south of town, Wednesday morning beside his wife and two children. Rev. Gardner conducted the Funeral services at the residence of Mr. Henry Smith
