In 1772, Adam left Maryland and followed his older brother, Andrew, westward to a new settlement on Harmon's Creek, west of Pittsburgh, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. At this time Adam was 26 years old. On October 12, 1777, Adam married Elizabeth Matthews-Cochran. Adam Poe and his brother, Andrew, were well-known in frontier history as the famous Indian fighters throughout the area of Western Pennsylvania, Northeast Ohio and West Virginia, which is known as the tri-state area. Adam had the skill of a frontiersman and woodsman. Adam is referred to as the Indian fighter, but was actually an Indian Spy/Scout along with others to watch the Indians to see what their plans were for attacking the white settlements. Adam served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

In the Fall of 1781, the Wyandot Indians had sent seven of its warriors across into the white settlers' settlement taking an old man prisoner and taking what they could with them. The Poe brothers and some other men pursued after the Indians where they caught up with them at the Ohio River. The other men had overtaken the five Indians while Andrew Poe took on the other two Indians in hand to hand combat. Andrew called to his brother to help him and Adam came to his aid. In the end, Adam Poe loaded his rifle more quickly than the Indian and shot Big Foot killing him. The spot where this conflict took place is along Route 2 north of New Cumberland in Hancock County, West Virginia and is marked with a historical marker. In 1803, Adam moved from Pennsylvania to Columbiana County, Ohio. He later settled in Wayne County, Ohio in 1813.

The year of his death is 1838 instead of 1840, as stated on the plaque in the above picture. According to "The family record and history of Rev. David Gray", Rev. Gray preached the funeral of Adam Poe, Sr. at his son, Andrew's house near Greenville, Ohio. Rev. Gray was serving the Dalton circuit during the year 1838, covering the territory where Andrew and Nancy Poe lived. During the funeral the gun, which Adam Poe, Sr. shot the large Indian called Big Foot, stood in the corner of the room.

The pic/sketch (#3) of the oldest looking Adam Poe on this memorial page is authentic as far as my research has proven. The sketch was done by the Pittsburgh Photo Engraving company as seen in the bottom left hand corner. The sketch came from the book "A True History of the Three Brave Indian Spies" written in 1887 by one of his grandson's.

The pic/sketch (#4), came from the book "A True History of the Three Brave Indian Spies" written in 1887 by one of his grandson's.

The photo(s) on this memorial page of a younger Adam Poe in a bow tie, I have not proven if it is authentic. If anyone has any information regarding this picture, please let me know. ("M" - 1/11/2013)
