DEATH OF MRS. BUCHANAN

PASSED AWAY AT HOME SOUTH OF COOK A WEEK AGO

Was born in a Log House Five Miles West of the Present location of Cook.

Report was made in this paper last week of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan at the family home, five miles west and three-quarters of a mile south of Cook, on Wednesday, February 3, 1937.

Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Stephen and Isabel Powell, was born November 24, 1862, in a log house five miles west of what is now the town of Cook. She resided there until she was nineteen years of age, when in November 1881, she was united in marriage to Jefferson Buchanan. They made their home on a farm one mile west of Burr, later moving to Davenport, Neb. To this union four children were born, and they are James Buchanan of Deshler, Mrs. Grace Watts of Oak, Alexander Buchanan of Nebraska City and Mrs. Chloe Reese of Mankato, Kans. There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren, also one brother, John Powell of Sterling, who survive. Mr. Buchanan died in June 1901. Since August 1935, she had made her home with Mrs. Joseph Powell of Cook. Mrs. Buchanan had been failing for some time. The Saturday preceding her death she suffered a paralytic stroke from which she did not recover.

The funeral was held at the Wherry chapel in Tecumseh, at 1:30 o'clock, Friday afternoon, some relatives from a distance coming to the obsequies. Rev. L. V. Hassell, pastor of the local Methodist church, had charge of the services. The interment was in the family lot in the Sterling cemetery.
