FISHERS LANDING, June 17.
—Captain Eldridge G. Robbins,
one of the best known men along the St. Lawrence river, and for 30 years a resident of Fishers Landing, died here Monday evening, following a brief illness of heart disease. He was 79 years of age.
Captain Robbins was one of the oldest of the river captains. He knew every inch of the island section and was familar with the Great Lakes from end to end. having spent many years as captain on lake craft. He was born on Robbins Island, now Picton island, located at the foot of Grindstone.
He followed the occupation of a captain and contractor. He
sailed on the Great Lakes on freighters for several seasons and finally located at Fishers Landing, where he conducted in late years a boat livery and charter business. He also built boats.
For some time he captained private yacths along the river.
Fifty-six years ago, he was married to Miss Catherine Eggleston,who survives him.
He also is survived by three daughters, Mrs George Shoemaker,of Watertown; Mrs. L.A. Mather, of New York; and Mrs. Effie Fluckiger of Clayton; and one son, Brainard Robbins, of Fishers Landing.
The funeral services will be held at the late home at Fishers Landing Wednesday at 2, Rev. Howland, pastor of the M. P. church of Lafargeville officiating Burial will be made at Clayton.
