Ivar Nilson Donnum was a blacksmith from Norway. He came to America with his wife Ingeborg Anna Duass, who died of cholera shortly after arriving in the US in 1865. She begged her friend Marit Gjerde to take care of her 3 children. After Ingeborg's death, Marit married Ivar and gave him 7 more children. As adults, the children changed their last names to Dunhom or Dunham.
