By the 1870 census, some of the older Bray family members, particularly an older brother Phillip Henry Bray, appeared as miners in the foothills community of Grass Valley, Nevada Country, between the Yuba and the Bear Rivers in northern California Gold Rush country.
Meanwhile William, with his 18-year old sister Bessie and their mother Elizabeth continued to remain at Rockland Township through at least that year.
But by the 1880 census, his mother and Bessie had moved far out southwest to also settle in Grass Valley, while William set off on his own to the north country of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, on the Continental Divide in central western Montana. There 22-year old William boarded with a number of other men, and worked as a clerk in a store.
By the mid 1880s William had also moved southwest, where he rejoined his family at Grass Valley. There he met and married Emma L. Hodge, five years his junior, and also an English immigrant.
The new Bray family stayed in Grass Valley for the next few decades. Their daughter Pearl was born in 1886, followed by their son Russell Harrison Bray in 1888, and Madeline in 1900. The family lived on Main St. William had taken in his elderly mother, Elizabeth, who died at the Main St. house in 1893.
In 1905, William then lost his first wife, Emma, there at Main St., at age 42.
The children grew up in that area over the next decade or so. By the 1910 census, William's oldest daughter Pearl had married William Oscar Angilley and that new couple settled in their own home nearby. The Angilley family had also taken in William's young daughter Madeline Bray. 21-year old son Russell stayed in the household with his widowed father William. Also, William had taken in his older sister Bessie Moore.
At some point between 1910 and 1920 William remarried there in Grass Valley, to Helena Maud Partridge Moyle. Helena's older teenage daughter, Margaret Ellen Moyle, then also joined the Bray family household at that time. Russell continued to stay with his father William, and at some point in this period Madeline also rejoined the William Bray household.
By the 1920 census the Bray family had moved a couple hundred miles southwest to Alameda Country, where they settled here in the Oakland area of the East Bay.
In 1935 William lost his second wife, Helena, who then became the first placement here in the Bray niche at the Mountain View Columbarium. She was followed by William in 1946, at age 87, who then joined her.
