Russell Bray was born in 1888, a couple years after his older sister Pearl. Their father was William Henry Bray from Cornwall, England.

Their mother was Emma L. Hodge, also an English immigrant. The Bray and Hodge families had both migrated to the foothills of northern California, where they settled at the town of Grass Valley, in Nevada County. The family lived on Main St. In 1905, 16-year old Russell lost his mother there at age 42.

Russell grew up in that area over the next decade or so, staying with his father William. At some point between 1910 and 1920 Russell's father remarried there in Grass Valley, to Helena Maud Partridge Moyle. Russell's teenage stepsister, Margaret Ellen Moyle, then also joined the Bray family at that time. Also at some point in that decade Russell's young adult sister Madeline, who had left sometime after her mother's death to go live with her older married sister Pearl, then rejoined Russell in their father's new household.

By the 1920 census, when Russell was in his early thirties, the Bray family moved a couple hundred miles southwest to Alameda County, where they settled here in the Oakland area of the East Bay.

Here in the 1920s Russell met and married his wife, Anna Lee Chapman Kern, a young earlier-married woman who was 12 years his junior. Anna was from San Jose in the south Bay Area.

In 1935 Russell lost his stepmother Helena, who then became the first placement here in the Bray niche at the Mountain View Columbarium. She was followed by Russell's father William in 1946, and then his sister's young daughter-in-law Lorelei only a few years later in 1949.

Just over a year later followed Russell's stepsister, Margaret. And then just within the next two years followed Russell's wife, Anna Lee in late 1951, at age 51.

The next decade and a half was relatively peaceful for the remaining Bray family, until Russell's own death in 1967, just shy of his 79th birthday. Russell then joined the earlier placements here in the Bray family niche.
