Obituary
John Franklin Laffey, 75, of Carthage for the past 14 years, and a lifetime resident of the Carthage area, died Saturday, February 15, 1997 at 1:20 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
He was born January 4, 1922 in Carthage Township, the son of Timothy and Nellie Clampitt Laffey.
On February 24, 1944 he married Edith Bath Jacquot in Xenia, Ohio. On June 23, 1983, he married Charlotte Wemhoner Heaney in Carthage. She survives.
Also surviving are five sons, Dave of Pekin, Tim of Dallas, Texas, Kent of Newark, Ted of Nevada, Mo., and Tom of Frankfort; six daughters, Mrs. Don (Ann) Gerber of Wheaton, Mrs. Mike (Donna) Tracy of Carthage, Mrs. Don (Mary) Holmes of Bowen, Robin Scheetz of Carthage, Mrs. Craig (Ardith) Hurst of Columbia, Mo., and Cathy Douglas of Carthage; one brother, Paul of Eldon, Mo.; four sisters, Irene Ryan of Peoria, Mrs. Pete (Josephine) Frantz of Lincoln, Mrs. Bill (Mary) Clarey of Peoria, and Mrs. Tom (Helen) Dixon of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; 24 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna, in 1935.
He attended Carthage area schools and the University of Illinois. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1946.
He worked at General Mills in Keokuk and had been owner and operator of the Wood Inn in Carthage for the past 14 1/2 years. He was past president of the Carthage Eagles Club. He was a past board member of the Carthage Golf Club. He was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Carthage VFW.
Funeral services for John Laffey were held Tuesday, February 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Robert Maloy as celebrant. Burial was in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. There was a flag presentation at the graveside by Philip Hartzell Post #74 and VFW Post #511 of Carthage.
Visitation was held Monday afternoon and evening at Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage. A rosary was recited Monday evening.
Memorials may be made to the Carthage Golf Course.
