She came to America from County Kerry Ireland in 1858. Her cousin Julia Shea was coming to join "her intended" Andrew McCarthy and did not want to travel alone. They went immediately to St Paul where Andrew was working and waiting. Ellen took a job as a dressmaker, but after the War, Andrew decided to look for farmland in southern Minnesota. He took his wife to a farm south of Mankato in about 1870. Ellen, having no other family, joined them, taking a job as a domestic for a farmer in Decoria township, a short buggy ride to the farm of her cousin Julia and her husband Andrew. It is not clear how they met, but in November, 1876 she married Anthony Callaghan. Theirs was the first marriage performed at the new wood frame Catholic church in St. Clair, MN (some what in the middle between her cousin Julia near Mankato and Anthony's family near New Richland). She had three daughters, including Mary Ann Dunhom whose grave is included here. They farmed near New Richland, MN from 1877 until 1901 when Anthony died. She returned to Decoria just south of Mankato where she rented a home from Fritz Ziegler. After suffering a heart attack, she went to the Mankato Old Folks Home in the St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato. She remained there until her death in 1915.
