Henry was the ninth of ten children born to John Platt (1793-1851) and Maria Elizabeth Shambauh (1796-1856), both of whom were born in Pennsylvania. His siblings were Lyda (1817-1828), Sophia (1819-1894), Mary Elizabeth (1821-1912), John (1825-1893), Sarah Salome (1827-1867), Susanah (1829-1852), Mary Jane (1832-1916), Allen (1833-1850), Henry here in 1834, and Harriet (1838-1909).

I found the family on the 1850 Census living in My Division, Marshall Co., Indiana. Five of the children are still at home with John and Elizabeth--John, Mary J., Henry, Allen, and Harriet.

I found a marriage record for Henry to a Talitha Ann Parker on 12 May 1860 in Fulton Co., Indiana. Fulton Co. was where Henry enlisted and I found a Henry and Anna Platt on the 1860 Census living in Rochester, Fulton Co. where Henry is working as a blacksmith. On the 1870 Census, they are still living in Rochester, Henry is still working as a blacksmith, and a daughter named Hattie A. is with the couple, born in 1862, just before Henry enlisted in the Union Army.

During the Civil War, Henry served with Co. F of the 87th Indiana Infantry. He mustered in as a private on 11 Aug.1862 and mustered out on 10 Jun.1865 with the rank of sergeant.

I found Henry on the 1880 Census, living in Green (now part of Argos), Marshall Co., still working as a blacksmith. He appears to have remarried. His second wife was Esther L. Wines (nee Hester Scott). It was also Esther's second marriage. She had previously married James Wines on Christmas Day in 1872 in Fulton Co., Indiana. She brought a son named James W. Wines, born in 1873, with her to the marriage.

Henry and Esther had three children together, the first given the name Hattie A. (b.Sep.1877) (This daughter was given the same name as the daughter Henry had with Anna who was born in 1862. Henry's little sister's name was Harriet so perhaps this was a nod to her, and suggests that the first Hattie died sometime between the 1870 and 1880 Census.) Their other two children were Louette or Lunette, born in Aug. of 1880, and Henry L., born in 1885, the same year that Henry Sr. died.

On 28 Aug.1883, Henry filed for war benefits as an "invalid" so perhaps his health was failing prior to his death in October of 1885. He was 51 years old.

I found two more marriage records for an Esther Platt, one on 1 Jul. 1886 to Oliver Sanders, and another on 3 Sep. 1887 to George Weyrick. On the 1900 Census, she is divorced, using the Platt surname, living in Union (today Culver), with her three youngest children and divorced daughter Hattie's son Roy Stape, born in Sep. of 1897 from her Oct. 1856 marriage to William Stape.

In 1910, Esther is living in Culver, grandson Roy is living with her, and she is widowed, still using the Platt surname.

I didn't find any other records for Esther who was about 62 in 1910.
