Bill Richard McCray was born on Feb. 15, 1935, in Uncas, Okla. to Jack Richard McCray and Genevieve Garland McCray. He passed from this life on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, in Stillwater, Okla. having reached the age of 74 years, seven months, and 15 days. He married Velma Claudine Mays on March 18, 1957, in Winfield, Kan., and they lived in Siloam Springs, Ark., Concordia, Kan., Skedee, Okla., before moving to Pawnee. They later divorced in 1984. Bill attended Ralston Public Schools, and served in the United States Army from June 28, 1957 until June 27, 1963. He served in the United States Army in Heilbronn, Germany from January of 1958 until June of 1959 and was an auto mechanic. He worked for Jack Marcum Motors and Moss Chevrolet as an auto mechanic. In 1968, he was certified as a master technician. He could work on any car, truck, tractor and often worked on many family members and friends vehicles, and loved doing it. He, along with his brother, Pat, owned and operated a wrecker service.In 1969, he went to work for the City of Pawnee Police Department as a dispatcher and later became fire chief, along with making ambulance runs, before retiring in 1981. He later worked in the oilfields and for Stockman's Mill and Grain in Pawnee before his last retirement date in April of 2004 Bill is survived by daughter Tammy Law and her husband, Noel, Tulsa, Okla.; son Roger Allen McCray, Pawnee, Okla.; daughter Sherry Sue McCray, Blair, Neb.; eight grandchildren Kelli Haga, Stillwater, Okla., Chris McCray and his wife, Alice, Pawnee, Okla., Nathan McCray and his fianc, Brianna, Stillwater, Okla., Amy McCray, Pawnee, Okla., Johnathan Stambaugh, Matthew Stambaugh, Blair, Neb., Mason Law, Ft. Smith, Ark., Grace Law, Ft. Smith Ark.; great-grandson Preston Lee Jester, Stillwater, Okla., plus another great- grandson to arrive in February of 2010; two sisters, Shirley Elliott and her husband, Don, Concord, Calif., Carol Fenton, Pawnee, Okla.; four brothers, Wilbur McCray, Skedee, Okla., Pat McCray and his wife, Diane, Pawnee, Okla., Anthony McCray and his wife, Sandi, Martinez, Calif., Keely McCray and his wife, Connie, Tulsa, Okla., plus a number of other relatives, and many friends.Bill was preceded in death by a son, Richard Lee McCray; his parents, Jack and Genevieve McCray, his sister, Rhonda Charlene McCray, sister-in-law, Sandra McCray and brother-in-law, Terry Fenton.Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the First Assembly of God Church, Pawnee, Okla. with Rev. James Eubanks officiating, under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Okla.
