According to the Perry Co. Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society in New Lexington and the genealogical collection of the late Ethel Albin of Sabetha, KS, Edward was b. abt. 1762, possibly in PA. Ethel Albin wrote: "Little is known about Edward Cavinee, but one incident in Bedford Co., PA, may give a little insight into his character. On 30 April 1825, a neighbor, Elijah Shipley, was indebted for $34.96 1/4 to Bardy & Warson & Thomas Norris, which he was unable to pay. He had his 100 acres of land put up for sale by the Sheriff. Edward Cavinee purchased this land at the sale for $150. On 14 June 1826, Edward & Rebecca transferred all of their rights, title, and interest in this property to Levan Shipley, the son of Elijah Shipley, for value received. This allowed Elijah to remain on his land." This is recorded in Bedford Co., PA Land Records Deed Book P, pages 407-409 George Mullen, Sheriff to Edward Cavinee, 30 April 1823. Edward Cavinee & Rebecca, his wife, to Levan Shipley, 14 June 1826. Levan Shipley m. Honor Barnes, dau. of Dawson Barnes, oldest brother of Caleb Barnes Jr., who m. Edward & Rebecca Cavinee's dau. Mary Cavinee.

As a possible relative or maybe even the father of Edward, Ethel Albin found a Patrick Cavener who appeared in a 1787 tax list for Cumberland Valley Twp., Bedford Co., PA. He was living on land belonging to Cox. Then in 1791, she found Patrick Cavener again in Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., PA. Note that Edward's son Jacob is thought to have been born in 1790 Somerset Co., PA.

According to Ethel Albin, "Edward and Rebecca (Gordon) Cavinee probably began their move to Perry County, Ohio, about 1828, as they sold off some land in the Fall of that year. His first land purchase in Perry Co. was from Reuben & Sarah Tharp. 4 Feb. 1832, W 1/2 SE 1/4 S33 T15 RE15. He also received a land entry for Congress land in 1834, S33 T15 R15, part of sect - NE 1/4 SE 1/4, 40 acres, Jan. 9 1834, now in Perry Co. Pike Twp. Ohio River Survey. He continued to purchase land, and sold most of it off to James Turner on 29 March 1845, NE 1/4 T14 R15, NW 1/2 S14 T14 R15, SW 1/4 SW 1/4 S11 T14 R 15, SW 1/4 S11 T14 R15."

Edward Cavinee wrote his will in 1836. A copy can be found in the Perry Co., OH, Court of Common Pleas, Probate Division, under Will of Edward Cavinee, 29 Feb. 1836. It was witnessed by Jesse Conrad & William Cavenee. According to Ethel Albin, the will named "his wife Rebecca, (but she died before he did) and all of his ten children, ie. Polly, Jacob, Sally, John, Nancy, Patrick, William, Elizabeth, David and Rebecca, each of whom was to receive equal portions of his estate. One of his children also predeceased him -- Mary "Polly", wife of Caleb Barnes. The husband of his daughter, Sarah "Sally", Philemon Barnes, also died before Edward. All of these children (except Polly, deceased) & their spouses (except Philemon, deceased husband of Sally), signed away their interest in Edward's land to David Cavenee, eg John Cavenee & Eliza, his wife, Jacob Cavenee & Catherine, his wife, Patrick Cavenee & Jane, his wife, William Cavenee & Margaret, his wife, Curtis Rugg & Rebecca, his wife, and Sarah Barnes and Caleb Barnes. The record for this is in Perry Co., OH Deed Book Q, page 542, John Cavenee et al to David Cavenee, 17 June 1846. Land NW 1/4 NW 1/4 S3 T14 R15, 39 9/100 acres. Witnessed by Wm. Shrevee & Wm. Valentine."

Edward's cemetery marker reads: "Edward Cavinee died April 3, 1846 age 83 yrs."

Daughter Elizabeth and her husband George Syckes were in the 1880 Federal census farming in the vicinity of Lexington, Le Sueur Co., MN. They are buried in the Greenwood Union Cemetery in Lexington Twp., Le Seuer, MN. They had a daughter Lavina Cavanah (Sycks) Harrington, who's buried in Lewiston, ID. I'm wondering if Elizabeth could have named Lavina after her paternal grandmother. We don't know the names of Edward Cavinee's parents yet.

Son John Cavinee and his wife Eliza with children Edward, Rebecca, Mary J., and Elizabeth were in the 1860 census for Farmers Creek Twp., Jackson Co., IA with Cavinee very misspelled as "Cavena." Then, John & Eliza were using the Cavenee spelling when they appeared in the 1870 census for Santa Clara Co., CA. John appears to have d. 1871-1880, while Eliza was in the 1880 census living with daughter Mary J. (Cavenee) Chase in Santa Clara Co., CA. After 1867 Santa Clara Co., CA, I last found John & Eliza's son Edward Cavanee, b. about 1835 OH in the 1880 census for Mineral Park, Mojave, AZ where he was still single and working as a miner. Mary J. (Cavenee) Chase is memorial #153846175 and her sister Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Cavenee) Shepherd is memorial #138998869.
