Mrs. Edward Morgan (Jane Daniels)
Mrs. Jane Morgan, widow of Edward Morgan, passed away yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.D. Stroh, 205 No. Main St. Although Mrs. Morgan had been in poor health for a number of years and for the past year had been confined to her bed practically all of the time, yet the end came rather suddenly. She suffered from debility and the end was peaceful.
Thus passes to join the great host of the dead another of the pioneer residents of Pittston--those who came here in the early days of the city, when Pittston was a mere coal village, and who have watched the progress of the city until it has reached its present prosperous state. Mrs. Morgan was born near Neath, in So. Wales, on March 13, 1827, having reached her 82nd birthday anniversary quite recently. She was a daughter of Morgan and Mary (Gibbs) Daniels, and was one of a family of seven children. Although the parents never made their home in Pittston, several of the children resided here for many years, and the family has been a familiar one to the people of this city.
When Mrs. Morgan was only four years of age she came with her parents to this country. The family resided in Carbondale for a couple of years and then moved to Spring Brook, Lackawanna Co., familiarly known as Beech Woods, where they were among the pioneers who cleared the forests and turned the land into productive farms. One of the older Daniels daughters, Mrs. John W. Davies, early became a resident of the Oregon section of Pittston, her husband having been a stone contractor here, and the home was a popular meeting place for the members of the Daniels family. The subject of this sketch spent considerable time here with her sister, Mrs. Davis, in the forties, and there made the acquaintance of Edward Morgan, who had come here as a young man from Wales. The couple were married at the Davis home, in 1849, and practically the remainder of their lives was passed in this community. Mrs. Morgan's only absence from this city was when she and her husband went to New Jersey for a couple of years, the latter having been interested in a slate quarry in that State. During the greater part of this long period, the Morgan homestead was at 205 No. Main St., where Mrs. Morgan's life came to a peaceful close yesterday. Her husband passed away 13 years ago.
Mrs. Morgan was one of the earliest members of the Welsh Congregational Church and retained her membership until the close of her life. She was widely known amoung the older residents of the community. In her earlier life she was a very active woman, especially about her home duties, and her children have the blessed memory of a mother who was devoted to their welfare. Though the closing years of her life were saddened by a long-continued illness, she was never heard to murmur, having maintained her cheerfulness and contentment until called to her final rest.
Mrs. Morgan was the last member of the family of Morgan Daniels. Father, mother and seven children have all passed to the great unknown. Mrs. Morgan is survived by two daughters--Mrs. S.D. Stroh, of No. Main St., this city, and Mrs. W.H. Holmes, of Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. The services will be conducted at the family home. They will be in charge of Rev. Dr., T.C. Edwards, of Kingston, who will be assisted by Rev. J.V. Stephens, of this city. Interment will be made in Pittston Cemetery.
