John Peter, a retired Sherman county farmer, died at 3:55 Friday morning, Feb. 16, 1940, at his home, 1523 Caldwell.
Funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran church, Rev. H. F. Meyer, pastor of the church, delivering the funeral sermon. Burial was in the Goodland cemetery.
Mr. Peter was born at Sutton, Nebr., Aug 8, 1882[sic], where he grew to manhood and received his education. He was baptized in early infancy in the Lutheran faith and at 18 years of age became a communicant of the church.
He was united in marriage with Emma Hornbacher at Sutton on Aug. 23, 1903, where the home was maintained for a number of years, with a brief interlude at Oakes, N.D. In 1919 the family moved to Sherman county and engaged in farming until last June, when Mr. Peter's health demanded his retirement and they moved to Goodland, their present home.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter, all of who survive their father, except one daughter, who died in infancy. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma Peter; Mrs. Walter Wieck and Mrs. Ed Patterson, both of Goodland; Mrs. Ruth Still of Phillipsburg; Mrs. Lawrence Fraily [sic], Mrs. Bert VanDonge, Edwin, Elmer, Arthur and Irene, all of Goodland.
In additon to the members of his immediate family, Mr. Peter is survived by his mother, Mrs. Phillip Peter of Sanger, Calif.; seven sisters and four brothers, Henry Peter and Mrs. Hugo Ochsner of Goodland; Mrs. Roy Boer, Mrs. Albert Trautman, and Mrs. Roy Jorn of Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Reinhold Peter, Mrs. Henry Neuenschwander of Ft. Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Adolph Trautman of Magnet, Neb., Reuben Peter of Seymour, Mo.; and Fred Peter of Sutton, Nebr.
