The Vanderbilt mansion was commissioned by Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1879. It was a 24-room, chocolate-colored house located off Farmington Avenue. It reportedly required one ton of coal per day to heat and was located on what was known between 1857 and the 1920s as Vanderbilt Hill (now called the West Hill Historic District). Cornelius traveled around the world and lived in other states while it was being built. He committed suicide in New York City in 1882 before occupying it and Cornelius Jeremiah had no children, so no Vanderbilt ever lived in the building that was known as the Vanderbilt mansion. The house, viewed from Farmington Avenue in the photo above, was demolished in the 1920s to make way for a housing subdivision. Only the brownstone walls surrounding the property, added as the mansion was built, remain as a lasting legacy of the Vanderbilt construction. A short street to the west of the property was named Vanderbilt Road.

In 1857, Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt, Sr. bought a fruit tree farm in West Harford, Connecticut for his son Cornelius Jr., who had married Ellen Williams of Hartford in 1856. The couple moved into a house built in 1804 by the Rev. Nathan Perkins, a local minister, for his son. The house was originally on a hill that become known as Vanderbilt Hill, and is now called West Hill. It was eventually moved to a location west of the hill, and, in 1909, to its current location at the corner of Farmington Avenue and Walkley Road (one block from Vanderbilt Road). For many decades it was the site of the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home.
