Second born son of William and Elizabeth Tittle English, Brother of George English born 1808 in Tennessee. Sister of James and George, Maranda married James Asa Smith
James settled about 10 miles east of Crockett in 1845. He had served with his brother Capt George English at the seige of Bexar, December 5 through 10, 1835, having joined the army of Texas November 1, 1835. He was discharged December 14, 1835. However, his service had not ended, for the Convention of Texas, which a fortnight before declared Texas free and independant, adopted a resolution appointing a man in each county to organize the county's militia. Thus, on March 16, 1836, the convention appointed James English to organize the militia for Shelby County. Soon, however, independance was won, and the Republic of Texas was established. For his service at the seige of Bexar,James received a Certificate for 640 Acres of Donation Land, which was surveyed in Houston County in 1845. There , he and his family established their home, where he lived for the remainder of his life. It was on this tract that Jim English Cemetery (also known as the English Cem. or the English Family Cem. was established.
James English married Mary Lucinda Walker on December 24, 1841. To them were born six (6) children:(1) Richard Bailey English (2) George Tittle English (3) Mary Elizabeth English (4) Louisa Jane English (5) Sarah Caroline English (6) William E. English.
