James "Evans" was born in Butler Co., Iowa in 1869. In the summer of 1886 or 1887, he came with his parents, Jehu and Isabelle (Hartgrave) Harlan, and their family to Nebraska and settled on a homestead just south of Twin Lakes in central Rock Co. In 1891 at the age of 21 he took on a homestead south of Peterson Lake which was about 3 miles southeast of his parents. Then on Dec 2, of that year he married Mina Lillian Sybrant in Perch, Rock Co., NE. In 1896 they purchased a ranch about 3.5 miles northeast of his homestead from Mina's 1st cousin Ebenezer F. Sybrant and moved there. They were the parents of 4 children:

Ora Vance "Orie"
Elva Esther
Irma Geneive
Ivan Evans

He died suddenly in his ranch home in Sybrant, Rock Co., NE where he and Mina lived for 53 years.
