He returned home in 1866; then on Dec. 25, 1866, he married Isabelle Jane Hartgrave in Franklin Co., Iowa. They were the parents of 9 children--8 born in Butler Co., Iowa, the 9th one in Rock Co., Nebraska.
In 1874 he again went prospecting for gold, this time was to the Black Hills of S. D., but the Indian troubles prevented his remaining there. He also went to Leadville, CO in 1879 for a short time.
His obit says they came to Nebraska in 1885 and established a homestead. This was on land just south of Twin Lakes in what later in 1888 became central Rock County. Some say they came in 1886. The obits of two of his sons, James Evans and John, says they came in 1887. Perhaps he came and established it in 1885, then brought his wife and 7 of their then 8 children in 1886 or 1887. It was here that their 9th child was born in 1888. On this trip to Rock County they brought two wagons and drove their livestock.
In 1893 they purchased a farm in southeast corner of Loup Co. near Kent, NE and moved there. This is where their younger children were raised. In 1910 they purchased a home in neighboring town of Burwell, Garfield Co., NE and moved there. Several years before he suffered a serious accident with a runaway horse from which he never fully recovered. He died June 20, 1911 in a hospital at College View, Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE where he had been taking treatments. Burial on June 23, 1911 in Cottonwood Cemetery, Burwell, NE.
PLEASE NOTE: The photo on this memorial that isn't colored is sometimes mistaken to be Jehu Harlan, Jr.'s father.
