Willa was born December 14, 1913, in Leeton, MO, to Minnie Idella Culp and William Thomas DesCombes. She was the youngest of seven children. She attended Leeton elementary and high school, and graduated as class valedictorian. She attended Central Missouri State Teachers College in Warrensburg, MO, with a Kappa Delta Pi scholarship, but her studies were interrupted by her marriage to George Holley in 1935. To support George while he finished his education degree, she took a position teaching in aone-room schoolhouse in central Missouri. Married women were not allowed to teach at that time, so, for the duration of the school year, they kept their marriage a secret from all but the family. Following that school year, George and Willa set up housekeeping. They lived in several small towns in central Missouri until they set down roots in Pierce City in 1944. In 1952, they moved to Maysville. In the summer of 1961, Willa returned to college at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, MO, to continue her education. That fall, she returned to teaching fifth grade in Stewartsville, MO. The summers of 1962 and 1963 found her back in Maryville, working toward her degree completion, while she continued to teach in the winters at Stewartsville. The summer of 1964, she returned to Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO, where she finally received her degree in education. That fall, she started teaching in Trenton, MO, where she taught fifth grade and later seventh grade math until she retired in 1974. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Minnie DesCombes, husband, George Holley, and son, Bob Holley. She is survived by her daughter, Ardyce Bucher, daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and MurrayMcCrary, daughter, Judy Holley, and son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Maggie Holley. She is also survived by and took great delight in her grandchildren, David Holley and his wife, Renee, Krista Holley, Karyl Dellaguardia, Mike McCrary and his wife, Tracy, Holley O'Brien and her husband, Fred, Sheri Hensley and her husband, Alan, Brian Holley, Patrick Holley, and Anna Holley; and great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Holley, Theresa, Allison, and Elayna Napoli, Chelsie Dellaguardia, Matthew and Marcus McCrary, and Calan and Braden Hensley. Willa had a great love for painting and during the years completed many china pieces, as well as many oil and watercolor paintings. She liked to write both prose and poetry, sew and crochet, and frequently made crafts for church bazaars and gifts for friends. During her lifetime, Willa belonged to many organizations, including the American Association of University Women, Eastern Star, Missouri State Teacher's Association, and United Methodist Women. She was amember of the Lenexa United Methodist Church. The family would especially like to thank friends Kathy Steiner and Hazel Dent for their tremendous love and support during Willa's life, the staff of Lakeview Village Health Center for their care and patience with Willa and all of the family, and the Kansas City Hospice for the comfort and assistance they provided.
