Jesse DesCombes Dies Near Leeton

Jesse DesCombes died Friday morning, June 19, at his farm home three miles southwest of Leeton. He had been bedfast some 2 1/2 months last fall, following a stroke on September 23, 1952, and had been in failing and despondent condition since that time.

Jesse Eugene DesCombes was the scion of a family which had lived in and near Leeton for generations. His father was born and reared on a part of the same farm on which Jesse himself was born and grew to young manhood. The son of W.T. and Minne Culp Descombes, Jesse was born June 10, 1902, in a home which W.T. DesCombes built on a pleasing site on the old DesCombes homestead. He attended school in the community, and on April 21, 1928, wed Miss Dorothy Gildersleeve, who lived in the Shawnee Mound community. The ceremony was performed in Warrensburg, at the home of the Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Mr. Hester.

Following their marriage, the young couple moved to the farm southwest of Leeton where the family still resides. Three children, all surviving, blessed their union.

Mr. DesCombes, one of a family of sturdy and industrious farmers, loved the soil and devoted his entire lifetime to his work and to his family. He became a member of the Methodist Church when very young.

Surviving Mr. DesCombes are his wife; three children, Billy Dean, 19, and Marjorie Nell, 17, both of the home, and Charles Frank, USN, stationed at Kingsville, Tex., who returned with his wife, the former Miss Dorcas Bowman, for the last rites; his mother, Mrs. W.D. DesCombes, Leeton; four sisters, Miss Lucille DesCombes, Leeton, Mrs. Jame Akers, Leeton, Mrs. Rice Hill, Pittsville, and Mrs. George Holley, Pierce City; a brother, Dean DesCombes, who lives with his family in the home where he and Jesse grew up together; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Last rites were conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 21, at the Methodist Church in Leeton, the Rev. William Bray officiating, with the assistance of the Rev. Bill Robertson. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mohler, Forrest White, and Mrs. Maudie Williams sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Abide With Me," with Mrs. Bill Robertson at the piano. Burial was in the Mineral Creek Cemetery in Leeton, with the following neighbors serving as escorts: Lewis Venable, Lee Hoard, Charley Wall, Elmer Hobson, Homer Roberson, and Earl Brown.
