John P. Wolcott, a lifelong resident of this section and well-known farmer, died Monday morning at his home on Monmouth road, West Long Branch. He had been in poor health for the past year. He was 78 years old.

Mr. Wolcott was born at Eatontown, a son of the late James B. and Mary Poland Wolcott, and moved to West Long Branch about 50 years ago.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Phillips of West Long Branch, three sons, John P., Jr., of Oceanport; Fred B. of Oakhurst, and Howard F. Wolcott of West Long Branch. Three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Witting of Hartford, Connecticut, Mrs. Kinmouth Tuzenew of Freehold, and Mrs. Harvey Herbert of Allenwood, and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the Willis A. Woolley funeral home, Long Branch, with Rev. B. F. Rhoades, pastor of Old First Methodist episcopal church, West Long Branch, officiating. An electric organ at the funeral home played "In the Garden," "The Vacant Chair," and "Nearer My God to Thee."

Burial was made in Glenwood cemetery. Bearers were six grandsons, Donald, Charles, Jr., and John Phillips, Calvin Woolley and John Wolcott, 3d, all of West Long Branch, and Frank Woolley of Oakhurst.
