William Franke was born in Witterda, Sachsen, Preussen. He was the only child of Michael Bonifatius Franke and Clara Elizabeth Blankenburg. The family emigrated to Wisconsin about 1860. William married Barbara Shelhorn in Wisconsin and they had 10 children. The family lived in Richardson, Nebraska during part of the 1870's where some of the children were born. About 1877, the family returned to Jefferson Co., Wisconsin where he and Barbara lived for the rest of their lives.
