Holly M. Dianich

Holly M. Dianich, 101, died peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at her home in Newark.

Born December 22, 1910, in Albion, Michigan, to Blanche Murray Sleeper and Arthur Frederick Sleeper, she was the youngest of five children. Her ancestors arrived in Hampton, NH, circa 1639.

Always a brilliant student, Holly attended Michigan State College for two years after high school and then graduated from the University of Delaware in 1952 with a degree in home economics.

After their marriage, they lived in Lansing, MI, Metuchen, Colonial and Plainfield, NJ, moving to Newark, DE, in 1945 when Frank became plant engineer of the new GM Boxwood plant in Wilmington.

Holly was deeply committed to volunteer work. Among her involvements were 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, charter member of UD's Academy of Lifelong Learning where she was known for her study of Latin, French and photography. She was also active in UD Extension, the D.A.R. where she was active in the Head of Elk Chapter, Sunshine Club and Bear Ladies' Club. Her passions included the art of photography, painting, sewing, writing her memoirs and compiling a booklet of her life's stories. She wrote hundreds of haiku poems, a traditional Japanese form of poetry. Later in life she took classes at the Newark Senior Center where she was a warm and constant presence. She was an avid life-long learner and read pages of the dictionary every morning and conjugated verbs in several languages to keep her mind sharp. She took up emailing to stay in contact with her family and friends and continued her contacts until she was almost 100. Most of all, she loved people of all ages and exuded a warmth and generosity of spirit that attracted people to her. Until her death, Holly lived at home with her son, James, a steadfast presence. She also enjoyed her dog Buster who kept a close watch on her in recent times along with an extraordinary and dedicated group of caregivers.

Preceding her in death were her beloved husband of 63 years, Frank, in 1994; her daughter, Nancy Stieber, in 2010; and her brothers, Paul and Murle and sisters, Hazel and Doris.

Holly married Frank T. Dianich in 1931 and raised six children. She is survived by her sons, James of Newark; David (wife Jacqueline) of Easton, MD; Michael of Corbett, OR; Richard (wife Virginia) of Bethesda, MD, and Catherine Dianich Gruver (fiancé Gary) of E. Dummerston, VT.

Holly has grandchildren including George William Prinkey III, Kari L. Dianich (partner Tracy), David M. Alkanowski (wife Janine), Lauren B. Dianich (husband Jon), Kim Dianich Bergeron (husband Dan), Karin L. Keita (husband Moussa), Frank Stieber (wife Bonnie), Sarah Gruver and Zachary Gruver. She also has eight great-grandchildren: David Jr., Aisha, Ibrahim, Gavin, Aminata, Eric, Amadou and Olive.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Main and Chapel Streets, Newark, on Saturday June 9, at 11 am to celebrate the life of Holly. A visitation with the family will follow the services. Interment will follow at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington, DE 19807.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Newark Senior Center, 200 White Chapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713 or Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
