The oldest memorial surviving is a plain
box-tomb dated l629 immediately opposite the
porch. It has a heavy chamfered stone lid which
bears signs of having been used for sharpening
tools or other agricultural equipment. What is
legible of the inscriptions is in deeply cut and
excellent lettering. On the west is the name
'Grace Turner' but no date; on the south is
'Robert Brown" (d.1696) and on the east the
initials WT and the date 1629.
