Joseph Bertrand was one of the wealthiest men in this section and was liked by all who knew him. He was never known to take advantage of any man in any way. He had little use for banks and hid his money in his house and on the farm. He was a frequent visitor in Jennings and always attracted attention because of his eccentricities. He was a small man and always went without shoes. His son, a man about 30 years of age, is his only heir.
Mr. Bertrand was murdered north of Jennings by David Miller.
