Wren Had Long Record of Service to Montana

Edward C. Wren, 43, Montana commissioner of agriculture, died in a plane crash at Wolf Creek Thursday night along with Gov. Donald Nutter and three other men.
Wren, a Great Falls native and Cascade rancher and farmer, was appointed commissioner by Nutter. His position also including serving as the real estate commissioner for the state.
A rancher since 1948 he had been active in Montana farm and legislative affairs. In 1958 he was appointed to represent Montana on the U. S. Department of Labor special Farm Labor Committee.
Wren was district census supervisor for the Great Falls area during the 1960 census.
In 1960 Wren was appointed to the advisory council of the Montana Unemployment Compensation Commission for a two year term. He also was chairman of Montana's Farm Action Committee for National Republican headquarters.
Born in Great Falls Sept. 29, 1918, he attended local public schools, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1936. During his senior year in high school, Wren was a quarterback on the Great Falls Bisons football team.
Wren was employed by the Anaconda Co. between 1936 and 1939, was in sales and advertising department of Eddy's Associated Bakeries in Helena and was Eddy Baking Co. plant manager in Grand Forks, N. D., before returning to the Great Falls area to enter ranching.
He entered the army from Helena as a private in 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant a year later, saw action in the Pacific during World War II, rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and served as regimental executive officer with the 24th Infantry Regiment. He was active in military reserve affairs following separation from the service in 1946 and is the past president of the Montana Reserve Officer's Association.
He is survived by the widow and 16-year-old son, Michael.
