In Smyrna, Dr. Dailey's practice flourished. He joined the Delaware State Medical Society in 1854, was a charter member of the Smyrna Public Library Association in 1858, and in a meteoric rise to medical fame and honor, at the age of thirty five was elected President of the Delaware State Medical Society for 1859-1860.
Dr. Dailey " took sides with the Government at the breaking out of the Civil War,"and in April of 1862 received a commission as a Brigade Surgeon in the Army of the Potomac. The Doctor was presented with the sword he is holding by his friends of Smyrna,DE on May 7, 1862 (Now in the hands of Daniel M. Dailey, 2012) He remained with the Army until October of 1863.
Upon leaving the Army, Dr. Dailey resumed his Smyrna practice. Partially disabled by war wounds, he declined to his death on October 4, 1865.
Edward married Arabella G. Reakart of Phila.,PA on May 2, 1850 at the Kensington M.E. Church in Phila., PA. The ceremony was preformed by his father Rev. David who was assigned to this church from 1849-1851. They had at least five children, Edward Jr.,Sadie, Arabella, Mollie and Kate. Sometime between 1870 and 1876 his wife and remaining children returned to Philadelphia, PA. Arabella died on September 1, 1893 and was buried in Monument Cemetery in her families plot. Later moved to Lawnveiw Cemetery in Rockledge, PA.
