This person was born the second son and child of Junia Sargent and Ida Mariah Dack Sargent. He was born in the cold winter of December 1879 (two days before Christmas) in Hurley, Dakota Territory (Ten Years before Statehood). He attended South Dakota State and then graduated from Northwestern Law School with a law degree.
In 1908, Jean married Mary Alice Spotts (1880-1960) of Portland, Cerro Gordo, Iowa. They were married at the home of her father Abraham Lincoln Spotts. They had 5 children, Carroll Vessey (1909-2004), William Boyd (1911-1983), Robert Lynn (1913-1985), Lois (1917-2012), and Ardis (1920-2012). He has eleven grandchildren who range in age from 78 to 53 (all of which are still alive in March 9, 2013). His grandson Eugene Sargent died on 10 July 2014.
They moved to Gettysburg to raise the children. In the 1920's and again in the 1950's (he was in the state legislature when he died), Jean became a state legislature for Potter County. Jean also served in many other posts such as District Attorney, and school board. He was also a volunteer firefighter.
Jean died of a hemorrhage in Gettysburg Memorial Hospital and was buried 2 spaces from his brother Billy in Gettysburg Cemetery.
There is also a bridge that crosses the Missouri river named in his honor.
