Founded E.J. Korvette, the first discount department store in the United States in 1948. At it's height there were 45 New York area locations. Sold his share in 1966 for $20+ million. Chain went out of business in 1980. At the time it was owned by Arlen Realty.

Sam Walton (Wal-Mart) studied Korvettes stores before founding his big box chain.

Made the cover of Time Magazine in 1962. Voted one of the six greatest merchants in U.S. history, alongside Frank Woolworth and J.C. Penney.

World War II veteran.

Benefactor of Yeshiva University and other causes.

Passed at age 91.
