Harold A. Bixler Dead
Harold A. Bixler, a maintenance worker at Emporia State college, died of a heart attack in the college gymnasium about 5 o'clock Friday night. Members of the family became anxious when he failed to return home from work at his usual time, and the body was discovered by other campus workers in the gymnasium about 8 o'clock.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the First Congregational church at 3 o'clock. The Rev. Stephen J. Williams, pastor of the church, will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery.
Mr. Bixler was born October 26, 1884, in Martinsburg, Ind., a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William G. Bixler. He was married to Stella Sparks in Odessa, Mo., April 22, 1907, and they moved to Emporia in 1914.
Surviving Mr. Bixler are his wife, of the home; three sons, Paul H. Bixler, Washington, D. C., Hugo F. Bixler, 2020 West Fifteenth, and William Royce Bixler, Corpus Christi, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Lolita Axtell, Marceline, Mo., Mrs. Ruth Downing, Deerfield, and Mrs. Roberta Keller, Alexandria, Va.; three brothers, Jess. E. Bixler, Louisville, Ky., C. Roy Bixler, Kansas City, Kan., and O. D. Bixler, Tokyo, Japan; and 12 grandchildren.
Mr. Bixler was a member of the First Congregational Church. He was regarded at Emporia State as an authority on ancient Greek and Roman history and attracted public attention in 1933 when, as a member of the district court jury in the trial of W. W. Finney, he held out for acquittal for several days. He alter changed his vote for conviction, after making a courtroom statement that made court history.
