She was born Nilsdotter, and the family changed their name to Backlund. As a girl she worked as a servant on someones farm. She married Nils Johan Soderkvist in 1882 in Ostra Amtervik Church. He was a carpenter and shoemaker. They had a small farm with two rooms and a loft, and one cow. They lived on the top of a hill near a small lake Folsjon. They had eleven children. The third child died young, but seven emigrated to the United States. The youngest three children Axel and Klara and Olga stayed home. The parents planted an apple tree when each child was born and had a orchard when they were done.

The children had to work outside the home after they finished school and had confirmation, age fourteen. The boys worked in logging and farm labor and carpentry. The girls in sewing and farm labor.

The child who died was Hjalmar who died about two years of age.

Anna's sister, Maria Backlund, took many of the the children to America when they were sixteen or older. Emily, Josephine, Alma, Karl, John, Oscar, Hilda. Most of them settled in New Jersey, and then Seattle.
