Excerpt from step-daughter Elizabeth "Watson" Ogilvie, states "Eskridge, my stepfather, was a true Whig and volunteered on a scouting excursion under Captain Starling Turner, down the country against the Tories at a place said to be Orangeburg. Captain Turner with his entire command was surrounded and butchered in cold blood. My stepfather and a maternal uncle (Benjamin Bell) were of the number. This was the bloody work of Bloody Bill Cunningham, the Tory Captain.

Burdett Eskridge was killed in the Cloud's Creek massacre, near Edgefield, SC, when he was a part of a military unit sent forth to recover stolen cattle from a large band of Tories. His first wife had died (or divorced, which is unlikely) within a year or two of his death, and he remarried to a lady named Hannah. She drew a pension for one or two years following his death His will is probated in that area.
His name was spelled "Burdit" by him and his will contains this spelling; however, the spelling of Burdett has been adopted by most people since that time. He was a grandson of Col. George Eskridge of VA.
My grandmother, Laura Alice Eskridge Ford, was a direct descendant from Burdett, and we can trace the line from Edgefield, SC, to Eskridge, MS (about three miles south of Duck Hill, MS,) in the early; 1800/s. ((James P. Knight))
