He was third child born in a large family. He was born on a small farm near Fölsjön lake, Östra Ämtervik parish, Värmland county, Sweden. The farm had a small home with two rooms and a loft, and one or two cows. There were eleven children and only one died, at age two. Seven went to the United States. The parents planted an apple tree when each child was born. His father was Johan Nils Soderqust and mother was Anna Backlund.

He died at age two and a half of illness.

He was buried in the churchyard of the parish church. His grave was unmarked.
